Tamar Tag Price Increase Consultation

March 15th 2026

Introduction

Tamar Crossings – the Tamar Bridge and the Torpoint Ferry – are owned by Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council and operated by a Joint Committee on their behalf.

In May 2025, Tamar Crossings implemented a toll increase to meet rising costs and maintain a small reserve for future works. However, as part of an ongoing financial review, Tamar Crossings have found that the TamarTag scheme currently costs more to run than it generates, meaning other parts of the business are subsidising it. This is not financially sustainable, and Tamar Crossings must take action now.

The TamarTag administration fee is currently set at 80p per month, regardless of the number of crossings made each month. The fee has remained the same since 2014, despite the rising costs described above. Tamar Crossings is therefore proposing to increase the monthly administration fee to £2. This means that the annual fee for securing the 50% toll discount will cost £24 rather than the current price of £9.60.

Increasing the administration fee to £2 per month would:

  • Cover the actual cost of running the scheme.
  • Avoid the immediate need to reduce the TamarTag discount or further increase tolls.
  • Help prevent deeper cuts to services or maintenance.

How to get involved

Tamar Crossings will be consulting with local communities and users of the Bridge on these proposals:

  • Webinar: Join our webinar on Monday 9 March from 6 -7 pm where Philip Robinson, Chief Operating Officer, will present details of and justification for the proposed TamarTag administration fee increase. You will have an opportunity to ask questions using the chat function. You can sign up to the webinar here

  • Drop-in Sessions: You can also attend one of our face-to-face events, where stakeholders and members of the public can drop in anytime between 4 pm and 7pm to view the proposals and discuss them with members of staff:

    • Tamar Bridge Visitor and Learning Centre on Thursday 12 March
    • Torpoint Town Hall on Tuesday 17 March

  • Static displays: Information regarding these proposals will also be available to view from Monday 9 March at the following locations:
    • Bridging the Tamar Visitor Centre
    • Torpoint Ferry Office
    • Torpoint Library
    • Torpoint Town Hall
    • Saltash Guildhall
    • Saltash Library

The consultation will close on Monday 6 April. All responses will be carefully considered before a final decision is made.
