February / March 2026 update
We’re continuing our extensive programme of works to update the technology in and around Saltash Tunnel.
Our works will help to keep journeys safe, reliable, and reduce the risk of unplanned closures.
This is a complex scheme where skilled engineers are upgrading the systems that keep tunnel users safe.
The civil engineering works are now complete with the last two gantries installed last week – one to the west of Carkeel roundabout, the other to the east of Manadon roundabout.
Over the last few weeks, our teams have also been busy behind the scenes continuing the electrical works. This includes installing and connecting 64 electrical cabinets. While we continue with the installation of the new technology, the current traffic management will remain in place.
The new lane control system represents a significant upgrade to tunnel safety. Upgrading technology in an operational tunnel is complex work that must meet strict safety standards. Once installed, the new systems will require rigorous safety testing to ensure they’re working as they should.
We expect the tidal flow lane control system will be switched on in the Spring, with the scheme fully complete later in 2026.
What’s coming up:
East service building
The tunnel’s east service building will shortly be undergoing extensive electrical refurbishment. The old electrical equipment that has been in place since the 1980s will be stripped out and new, modern electrics installed.
We expect these works to be carried out over the next couple of weeks.
